Topping that would be hard for anyone, but in “Lorelei,” the Twins do it, with an introductory, breathtaking guitar surge leading into one of Fraser’s best vocals, compelling in both its heavenly and earthly tones and rolls. Not a word may be understandable, but it isn’t necessary, while the music, driven on by a pounding rhythm, is as perfect a justification of digital delay pedals and the like as can be found.
As Treasure continues, the accomplished variety is what stands out the most, whether it be the gentle, futuristic-medieval pluckings on “Beatrix,” the understated moody washes and Fraser whispers on “Otterley,” the upbeat guitar lines of “Aloysius,” or the slightly jazzy touches on “Pandora. Hoki poki dominoki With this album, the band settled on what would, from then on, be their primary lineup: vocalist Elizabeth Fraser, guitarist Robin Guthrie and bass guitarist Simon Raymonde.
This new lineup also coincided with the development of the ethereal sound associated with the band’s music. As with the other recent 4AD vinyl reissues of the Cocteau back-catalog, this sounds absolutely sublime.
In fact, and maybe it’s because Treasure is such an early release, the mastering job here is truly stunning and makes for what I believe is the finest Cocteau Twins reissue yet, and I’m about as big a fanboy of CT as you’ll find. The stereo image is totally crisp and enveloping, and between the songs there is dead silence, as dead as it gets. I absolutely love this album, originally bought on cassette in the 80s upgraded to CD but you can’t beat vinyl. Purchased on behalf of a neighbour. Price was good but cannot comment on the music itself as I haven’t listened to it. Great Amazon service, as always!
Report abuse. This CD was bought as new. It was a bargain for what I paid for it but how can a new CD have a scratched and damaged cover with evidence of a removed sticker UNDER the undamaged clingfilm it was wrapped in?
